Working properties
European oak machines well, nails and screws well although pre-boring is advised. As it reacts with iron, galvanized nails are recommended. The wood dries slowly and care is needed to avoid collaps. Due to its high shrinkage it can be susceptible to movement in performance.

General description
European oak is similar in color and appearance to American white oak. The heartwood is light to dark brown and stands stongly against the 20-25mm pale-brown sapwood. European oak can vary in color, texture, characteristics and properties according to the growing region. A hard heavy wood and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very attractive grain markings, particularly when quarter-sawn.

Construction, furniture, flooring, architectural joinery, mouldings, doors, kitchen cabinets, paneling, railway sleepers, timber bridges, barrel staves.
