Working properties
The blunting effect is fairly high; peeling is not recommended or without interest and slicing is reported to be good. Some difficulties due to interlocked grain. Nailing is good but pre-boring is necessary. Gluing is correct for interior only. It dries slowly and drying must be slow and careful in order to reduce defects.
General description
The wood varies from yellow brown to dark lustrous brown. Oily aspect. The sapwood is not clearly demarcated. The grain is straight and the texture is fine. Density at 12 % moisture content: 0.86 g/cm3.
Main uses
Itauba can be used for several applications: Interior: e.g. panelling, flooring, sliced veneer, high class furniture, seats, stairs, joinery. Exterior: e.g. posts, ship building, bridges, open boats, wood frame house, sleepers, joinery, panelling, vehicle or container flooring, heavy carpentry.
